HOW DOES THE INDUSTRY APPEAL TO THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF POP MUSIC?

How does the music industry appeal to the demographic of the genre of pop?

I am exploring the genre of pop music for my music video. When putting pop to one of the categories on the demographics table I would say that pop fits under the D category of the working class and maybe under group E depending on what artist is performing. I believe that the working class listen to pop music because it is current and enjoyed by a younger, teenage or even student audience. Audiences listen to pop music because it is current and might have some releavence to their own lives, they will listen because they enjoy the brightness of a pop video, the music videos, the artists or even the costumes. Pop is very current so people can always relate to the lyrics. They consume it because t fits to their own personal needs, this is why Blumler and Katz created the Uses and Gratifications theory as the audiences use music videos and song lyrics to gratify their own needs and make them feel more accepted and normal in society as pop keeps up with the trends.

Pop music is usually consumed through music channels on the audiences televisions, these include things like; Viva, 4music, MTV and many more because these music channels air pop music because it is what is being consumed the most and what people tune in to watch is what they are going to show. It is because the music channels broadcast the Top 40 pop charts, and download charts and pop is one of the highest consumed genres so they air this type of music. Also many pop artists are always creating new cd's to keep growing with the fast moving music industry, they are always competing but the cd's are always sold. They are sold in many different shops now, cd's usually only used to be sold in record shops like HMV but now supermarkets sell them for cheaper. Also audiences consume their products by streaming their music videos from things like Spotify and Youtube as it easy for people to listen to music and watch the video at the same time. People also illegally download music from sights, which is bad for the artists because they are not making any money from the downloads.

Pop artists appeal to their audiences in a variety of different ways. Usually pop artists sing about things that are relevant to things that happen in reality, they like to sing about the things their fans want to hear. They wear clothes which are worn by their target audience so people watch their videos they will wear clothes that are fashionable now because they know their fans will want to be like them because they idolise them and look up to them. Pop artists often show relationships in their music videos and sing about love which a lot of people can relate to and watch them because of their current feelings.

Many pop artists/ bands are a lot more like brands as well as bands now. They have their own merchandise and have big advertising campaigns on tv's, social media and many other ways. Like One Direction for example had their own pop up shops all over the world selling their merchandise. Also artists use concerts to advertise new albums or songs, and then audiences will go tell other consumers about how good it was and then they will consume their music. They create big campaigns on television which are almost secretive to their fans, so they create a large hype about a new product and then fans go mad over social media and other people read it which creates a large thing what everyone is talking about. These all appeal to the audience because they are intrigued and want to know more about the product and because people will be talking about the product and then they go and consume it which is always making money for the artists.

The media often represent Pop music in an over sexualised way. Artists, well female artists are seen as sexual objects as Laura Mulvey and her Male Gaze theory reinforces this espeically when it comes to the pop genre. Artists like Katy Perry, Rihanna, Ariana Grande and many others are supposed to be sexual and sex sells and pop music often reflects this. But the media also present the pop genre in a postive manner because it is the most listened to genre of music as people enjoy listening to it and also consuming the music videos. A lot of pop videos are sometimes explcit and they are censored for daytime television. As the audiences vary for pop, the artists have to keep their music current and the media often try and betray this on social media.
