EVALUATION QUESTION 1 - (IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?)
In this evaluation question I am going to be discussing the different ways in which my music video uses, develops and challenge the forms and conventions of real media products.
Cinematography, mis-en-scene and editing analysis of my music video:
Cinematography, mis-en-scene & editing analysis of digi-pack & music advert:
Does my music video, digi-pack and music advert conform to the pop genre?
I believe that my music advert does conform to the pop genre, this is because I have used bright colours (pinks, yellows, blues, greens) which has positive connotations and creates a happy and uplifting mood which is betrayed by the pop genre because it is a dramatic genre. I also have used images like the large star and musical notes in the top right corner the pop genre is all about being the best and it is like a competition within the music industry between artists, the large star draws attention to the artist and makes her stand out sort of like a metaphor for the fact she is a star. I have used large, bold and bubble fonts which stand out from the rest of the page and is over the rest of the imagery you see this a lot in existing products because it is used to attract an audience and this will be one of the first things they look at, this is conventional of the pop genre because it is large and dramatic. Also I have advertised my artist on social media, and by a 5 star rating this is also conventional of the pop genre because it is enhancing the chances of an audience purchasing the product because it is bright and engaging.
I believe that my digi-pack also meets the conventions of the pop genre for the same reasons as my music advert. I followed the same colours and imagery throughout to create continuity. I believe it conforms to the pop genre through the use of the bright colours, which are eye-catching and dramatic. The colours used contrast with other parts of the product to make specific things stand out, I also believe it conforms to the pop genre because my artist is wearing bright clothing and is wearing dramatic makeup, which is conventional of the pop genre because it reinforces the artist as a star and draws attention to her which is what existing artists do on their albums to show them as the the main protagonist. I believe it conforms to the pop genre through the use of the bright, cartoon like imagery on the different sides of the digi-pack because they're bright and bold and eye-catching they're also persuasive because they're intriguing and would make an audience buy it, which is what the pop genre does they sell products. Also it conforms to the pop genre because I have done two CD's in my album instead of one, this is conventional of the pop genre because one of them has the music on and the other one is added extras, a dance CD or sing-a-long version I made the decision to include this because it makes it more realistic of the pop genre. Finally, I have used the bright, bold fonts which draws attention to the CD and the artists name which the pop genre does it draws attention to every aspect of the artist to sell their product.
Then finally my music video, I find it hard to define whether or whether not my music video actually conforms to the pop genre because it isn't stereotypical of the pop genre or what you'd expect to see when it comes to a pop music video. But I believe that in some ways my music video does conform to the pop genre because as the song used in my video is written by Bruno Mars which is a pop artist this means my genre is automatically pop but because my song 'Talking to the moon' is a slow, love and romance song the editing is slow and to a beat it does conform to the pop genre in certain ways because there is costume changes, the use of makeup, different locations and also I put text on the screen using a glitter font which is conventional of the pop genre because pop uses non-diegetic material on the screen (text) to match the lyrics. Also my music video has both a narrative and performance element which is typically found within the pop genre because a bit of both creates a strong pop video. I also have used fast pace edits, colour filters and different transitions in my music video which is typical of the pop genre because the shots can't be any longer than 2-3 seconds to keep the music video interesting. But on the other hand to some degree I believe my music video isn't conventional of a pop video because I have a lot of black and white shots in my music video which isn't usually seen in the pop genre because it isn't bright and colourful and eye-catching but mine is used to reflect my narrative. Also my female artist is wearing full clothing, unlike Laura Mulvey would say in the Male Gaze Theory that women are seen as sexual objects and that is what female artists in the pop genre are usually betrayed like but I didn't want my artist to be betrayed like this because it is more of a love story. I believe my music video is pop related but also doesn't conform to the genre in certain ways as it doesn't follow pop stereotypes.
My products (digipack, music video & music advert) use, challenge or conform to conventions:
What theories apply to my music video & is there any link between lyrics and the imagery I have used?
